Amazon Watch
Amazon Watch is a nonprofit organization founded in 1996 to protect the rainforest and advance the rights of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon Basin. Amazon Watch works in solidarity with Indigenous and environmental organizations in campaigns for human rights, corporate accountability, and the preservation of the Amazon’s ecological systems.
The Amazon is at a tipping point – already more than 20% has been deforested, and new fossil fuel extraction, mining, land grabs, and other destructive development cause even greater deforestation. Amazon Watch protects millions of acres of rainforest every year by partnering with Indigenous peoples to directly challenge the corporate and government powers that threaten the Amazon and our global climate, to keep fossil fuels in the ground, stop investment in Amazon destruction, and confront destructive industrial development and resource extraction.
Amazon Watch supports and promotes Indigenous-led alternative solutions to climate change, natural resource extraction, and industrial development. The knowledge, cultures, and traditional practices of Indigenous peoples contribute greatly to the equitable stewardship of the Amazon. Amazon Watch promotes Indigenous-led solutions, such as green development and autonomous solar power, and expands capacity for Indigenous leaders, especially women, to maintain their sovereignty for the stewardship of their territories, including distributing a third of its budget direct to Indigenous peoples as solidarity funding for their solutions, movements, and resistance.
